WASHINGTON, D.C. β€” President Donald Trump announced Thursday that his administration has reached a preliminary agreement to end hostilities with Iran, with a formal signing ceremony potentially taking place in Europe as soon as this weekend.

“We just made a great settlement of the war with Iran and we’re going to be subject to finalization of documents, which should get done over the next few days, probably have a signing, maybe in Europe, and it’s a great thing,” Trump said from the Oval Office.

Nuclear Restrictions and Oil Route Reopening

The proposed agreement would prevent Iran from developing or purchasing nuclear weapons and end the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, a key oil shipping route, according to the president. Trump indicated he would not personally attend the signing ceremony but would likely send Vice President JD Vance as his representative.

The president expressed optimism that ending the conflict would reduce gas prices, which increased significantly after the United States and Israel launched their joint bombing campaign in late February.

Congressional Opposition and War Powers Debate

The Iran conflict sparked considerable controversy on Capitol Hill, where Democrats successfully forced floor votes on multiple War Powers resolutions. The opposition questioned whether Trump possessed the constitutional authority to conduct an extended bombing campaign without a formal congressional declaration of war or an authorization for use of military force.

The Trump administration previously declared the war “terminated” in a letter to Congress on May 1. However, military strikes resumed this week following an incident in which an Iranian drone shot down a U.S. helicopter.

Recent Escalation

The renewed hostilities came after a period of relative calm, demonstrating the volatile nature of the conflict that began in late February. The war has involved joint U.S.-Israeli operations against Iranian targets, including strikes on residential areas in Tehran.

Trump’s announcement comes amid ongoing questions about the administration’s military strategy and congressional oversight of war powers. The potential European signing ceremony would mark a significant diplomatic development in a conflict that has lasted nearly four months.
