RALEIGH, NORTH CAROLINA β€” The National Weather Service issued multiple heat advisories across North Carolina on Wednesday afternoon, warning residents of dangerous heat index values reaching up to 108 degrees through Friday evening.

The advisories affect large portions of central and eastern North Carolina, with heat index values ranging from 102 to 108 degrees expected through 8:00 PM EDT on Friday, June 12. The warnings cover areas from the Charlotte metro region to the coast, including the Piedmont, Sandhills, and Coastal Plain regions.

Current and Extended Heat Warnings

The most severe conditions are forecast for inland areas of Eastern North Carolina, where the National Weather Service Newport/Morehead City office predicts heat index values up to 108 degrees from 11:00 AM to 8:00 PM EDT Friday. Central North Carolina, including portions of the Coastal Plain and eastern Piedmont and Sandhills, faces heat index readings up to 107 degrees during the same timeframe.

In the Charlotte metro area, Cabarrus, Mecklenburg, and Union Counties are under a heat advisory through Friday evening, with heat index values expected to reach 102 to 105 degrees from 11:00 AM to 8:00 PM EDT.

Health Risks and Safety Precautions

Weather officials warn that the combination of hot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat-related illnesses. The advisories emphasize particular concern for vulnerable populations, including elderly residents, young children, and those working outdoors.

The current heat advisory for portions of central North Carolina remains in effect until 8:00 PM EDT Wednesday evening, with heat index values reaching up to 105 degrees. This advisory covers areas including the Coastal Plain and eastern portions of the Piedmont and Sandhills.

Multi-State Impact

The heat wave extends beyond North Carolina’s borders, with the National Weather Service Wakefield, Virginia office issuing advisories for northeast North Carolina and portions of central, east central, south central, and southeast Virginia. These areas face heat index values up to 105 degrees from 11:00 AM to 8:00 PM EDT Friday.

Weather officials recommend residents stay hydrated, seek air-conditioned environments when possible, and limit outdoor activities during peak heat hours. Those who must work or exercise outdoors should take frequent breaks and watch for signs of heat exhaustion.

The advisories were issued by multiple National Weather Service offices throughout Wednesday afternoon, with the earliest warning posted at 11:27 AM EDT by the Raleigh office and additional updates continuing through 2:32 PM EDT.
