TBI Investigates Deadly I-40 Shooting After Kidnapping Suspect Standoff
A kidnapping suspect was shot and killed on I-40 near Exit 87 in Madison County after releasing a child and brandishing a weapon during a standoff with THP and sheriff’s deputies.

JACKSON, TENNESSEE β A kidnapping suspect was shot and killed by law enforcement officers Friday afternoon following a vehicle pursuit and standoff on Interstate 40 in Madison County, according to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation.
The incident occurred near Exit 87 on I-40, where Tennessee Highway Patrol troopers had been pursuing a westbound vehicle they believed was driven by a kidnapping suspect with a young child inside.
Spike Strips Led to Standoff
Law enforcement deployed spike maneuvers to stop the vehicle just west of Exit 87, leading to a standoff between officers and the male suspect. During the standoff, the man released the child from the vehicle, according to TBI.
After the child was released, the suspect exited the vehicle and began walking westbound along the shoulder of the highway. Officers attempted to use less lethal means to take him into custody, but those efforts were unsuccessful, according to TBI’s preliminary account of the incident.
Suspect Brandished Weapon Before Shooting
The situation escalated when the man displayed a weapon, prompting officers to open fire. The suspect was struck and killed. No law enforcement officers were injured during the incident, TBI reported.
The shooting involved officers from both the Tennessee Highway Patrol and the Madison County Sheriff’s Office, according to TBI.
TBI Conducting Independent Investigation
At the request of 26th Judicial District Attorney General Jody Pickens, TBI special agents are conducting an independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting. Agents are collecting evidence and conducting interviews as part of that process.
TBI said investigative findings will be shared with Attorney General Pickens for his further review and consideration. The agency noted that it acts solely as fact-finders in such cases and does not determine whether an officer’s actions were justified β that determination rests with the requesting district attorney general.
TBI does not identify the officers involved in officer-involved shooting investigations and referred questions about officer identities to the respective agencies. Updates on the investigation will be posted at TBINewsroom.com, according to the agency.
