Motor City Pride parade draws record-breaking crowds to downtown Detroit
Motor City Pride’s downtown Detroit parade broke attendance records Sunday, drawing over 65,000 people in a colorful celebration of LGBTQ+ community and advocacy.

DETROIT, MICHIGAN β Motor City Pride’s annual parade attracted a record-breaking crowd to downtown Detroit on Sunday, celebrating the LGBTQ+ community with a colorful procession featuring political candidates, community organizations, and corporate sponsors.
The event surpassed last year’s attendance of 65,000 people, according to Motor City Pride Chairperson Dave Wait, though official guest counts for this weekend’s festivities have not yet been finalized.
“We’re really pleased that we’re able to provide this safe space for individuals to be their authentic selves,” Wait told Michigan Advance on Monday.
Celebration with a Message
While the parade was a vibrant celebration, organizers emphasized the ongoing advocacy work needed for LGBTQ+ rights. Wait highlighted Michigan’s progressive stance while acknowledging challenges that remain.
“Our message is, we come together to celebrate the advancements that we’ve made to celebrate how progressive Michigan is, and how welcoming Michigan is to LGBTQ+ individuals, but we’re also here to continue advocating for full protections,” Wait said. “We know that there’s still some changing of hearts and minds that we need to do around the state and around the country.”
Political Participation
The parade drew participation from prominent political figures, including Attorney General Dana Nessel and U.S. Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed, who posed for photos with supporters during the downtown festivities.
The event showcased the diversity of support for LGBTQ+ rights across different sectors, with candidates, community groups, and corporations all displaying their rainbow colors throughout the parade route.
Motor City Pride continues to serve as one of Michigan’s largest LGBTQ+ celebrations, providing both a platform for joy and visibility while advancing the ongoing fight for equal rights and protections.
