Trump Administration Hosts Prayer Festival on National Mall for America’s 250th
Federal tax dollars fund all-day prayer event on National Mall featuring evangelical leaders as part of America’s 250th anniversary celebration.

WASHINGTON, D.C. β The Trump administration hosted an all-day prayer festival on the National Mall today, partially funded with millions in taxpayer dollars, to “rededicate” America to God as part of the nation’s 250th birthday celebration.
The event, called a “jubilee” by organizers, featured mostly evangelical Protestant leaders and members of the Trump administration, according to the Washington Post. Many participants embraced the message that America’s founders wanted the country to be explicitly Christian.
Constitutional Separation Challenged
The prayer festival marks what critics describe as the collapse of the Constitutional firewall between church and state. This separation was first articulated by Thomas Jefferson, the principal author of the Declaration of Independence, which was ratified July 4, 1776.
Jefferson’s writing included the line “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.” His thinking was influenced by British philosopher John Locke, who argued for government by consent of the governed, and George Mason of Virginia, who earlier advanced similar ideas about equality.
The separation of church and state was formalized by the establishment clause of the First Amendment to the Constitution. In an 1802 letter to the Danbury Baptist Association in Connecticut, Jefferson described a “wall of separation” between matters of government and those of religion.
Partisan Message Concerns
Critics argue that America’s 250th birthday celebration has been co-opted by the current administration to convey an overtly partisan message. They contend this message seeks to fabricate an American founding that never existed to justify what they call an imperial presidency that was never intended.
The First Amendment, just 45 words long, enumerates rights concerning religion, speech, assembly and the press, along with the right to petition for a redress of grievances. This separation was codified over generations of American jurists to prohibit the government from either promoting or inhibiting a religion.
Historical Context
The Declaration of Independence remains America’s founding document, establishing principles of equality and government by consent that have shaped the nation for two and a half centuries. Jefferson’s literary influence drew from Enlightenment philosophy while incorporating earlier American thinking about individual rights and democratic governance.
Today’s federally-funded prayer festival represents a shift in how the federal government approaches religious matters in public spaces, particularly during national commemorative events.
