DETROIT, MICHIGAN β€” Governor Gretchen Whitmer maintains a 52.2% approval rating in the final months of her administration, even as Michigan voters express growing concerns about inflation and the economy, according to a new Detroit Regional Chamber poll released Tuesday.

The poll, conducted by The Glengariff Group between April 28 and May 1, surveyed 600 registered voters ahead of the organization’s annual Mackinac Policy Conference on Mackinac Island. The findings reveal a state grappling with economic uncertainty while expressing continued confidence in its governor’s leadership.

Economic Pessimism Reaches New Heights

For the first time since January 2025, more Michigan residents expect a recession within the next year rather than a growing economy. Inflation fears have climbed to 49%, reaching their highest point since 2023 and marking the most pronounced economic anxiety recorded in any year the chamber has conducted pre-conference polling.

The job market outlook has deteriorated significantly, with only 46.3% of registered voters saying good jobs are available to them. This represents a sharp decline from 62.7% who felt the same way in May 2024.

Sixty percent of voters now perceive a weakening economy, an increase from 56.8% recorded in February. The overall state direction remains divided, with 48.5% of respondents believing Michigan is on the right track while 42.5% say the state is headed in the wrong direction.

Governor Maintains Strong Standing Despite Challenges

Despite the economic concerns, Whitmer’s approval rating demonstrates resilience in her second term. Only 39% of voters surveyed disapproved of her job performance as governor during these months of her administration.

The chamber noted that governors typically see their approval ratings decline by 13 percentage points during their second terms. However, Whitmer’s approval rating has increased more than 15 percentage points, bucking the national trend for second-term executives.

Additional Challenges on the Horizon

The poll identified several emerging issues facing Michigan beyond economic concerns. Voters expressed displeasure with the current two-party system, and the state faces upcoming decisions regarding the regulation of data centers as technology infrastructure continues to expand.

The Detroit Regional Chamber released these findings as business and political leaders prepare to gather for the Mackinac Policy Conference, where economic policy and Michigan’s future direction are expected to be central topics of discussion.

Whitmer has not yet announced her post-gubernatorial plans as her second and final term approaches its conclusion. The governor’s sustained popularity amid economic headwinds positions her as a significant political figure whose next move will be closely watched by state and national observers.
