GREENSBORO, NORTH CAROLINA β€” Aviation startup JetZero broke ground on its manufacturing facility and headquarters in Greensboro on June 15, 2026, launching what state officials are calling the largest economic development project in North Carolina history based on job commitment.

The company’s $4.7 billion investment into its Greensboro facilities is projected to generate more than 14,500 aerospace manufacturing jobs and boost the state’s economy by more than $250 billion, according to Gov. Josh Stein’s office.

A New Chapter in North Carolina Aviation

Governor Stein attended the groundbreaking ceremony and praised the company’s decision to plant roots in the state. “Today, a great new chapter in North Carolina’s storied history of flight is taking off,” Stein said. “JetZero’s decision to build here is a vote of confidence in North Carolina’s workforce, our universities and community colleges, and our long aerospace tradition.”

North Carolina Commerce Secretary Lee Lilley also spoke at the event. “Today’s groundbreaking marks the beginning of a project that will prove to be a leader in both aerospace and advanced materials,” Lilley said.

JetZero will also relocate its headquarters from California to Greensboro as part of the expansion, further anchoring the company’s operations in the state.

The Z4: A Blended Wing Aircraft

JetZero has built its reputation around a distinctive commercial aircraft design known as the “all-wing” or “blended wing body” jet. The Z4 features a stingray-like shape in which the fuselage and wings merge into a single continuous form, a design spearheaded in partnership with the U.S. Air Force and projected to begin flying in 2027, according to JetZero’s website.

The company claims the Z4’s design will cut fuel consumption in half compared to traditional passenger aircraft, while also producing fewer emissions. Major airlines including United and Delta have already invested in JetZero, with the fuel-efficient jets potentially allowing carriers to offer more affordable tickets as fuel costs remain high.

An 8-Million-Square-Foot Complex Near PTI

JetZero plans to build its planes at a facility projected to span 8 million square feet across more than 600 acres near Piedmont Triad International Airport in Greensboro. The scale of the complex reflects the company’s ambitions to become a major force in commercial aerospace manufacturing.

The groundbreaking represents one of the most significant industrial investments in North Carolina in recent memory, with state officials framing the project as a long-term economic anchor for the Piedmont Triad region and beyond.
