GAINESVILLE, FLORIDA β€” Former University of Alabama President Stuart Bell is facing criticism from some University of Florida alumni and political figures following his selection as the sole finalist to lead the state’s flagship university. Opponents are questioning his past support for diversity, equity, and inclusion programs.

Within hours of Monday’s announcement by the UF presidential search committee, critics took to social media to challenge Bell’s 40-year academic career and his positions on DEI policies.

“WOW β€” major red flags here,” Lake County Commissioner and former state Rep. Anthony Sabatini wrote on X and Instagram. “Why is @UF pushing a pro-DEI administrator?”

Political Opposition Emerges

Sabatini, a Republican running for Congress who holds two degrees from UF including his law degree, called for the UF Board of Trustees to halt Bell’s candidacy. “UF Board of Trustees must pump the brakes on this ASAP,” Sabatini’s post continued.

The rapid backlash suggests Bell’s selection could become contentious and result in political infighting among Florida Republicans, similar to previous leadership searches at the university.

Bell’s DEI Record at Alabama

Bell established the Division of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at the University of Alabama in 2017, according to media reports. However, he ordered the division shut down in 2024 to comply with Alabama legislation banning state or local municipality support for DEI programs.

After the law took effect, Bell replaced the division with a Division of Opportunities, Connections, and Success. G. Christine Taylor, who had previously headed the DEI division, was reassigned to lead the new department.

The controversy highlights ongoing tensions in Florida over DEI policies in higher education, as state universities have faced increasing scrutiny over such programs in recent years.

Search Committee Decision

The presidential search committee’s decision to name Bell as the single finalist follows standard practice for Florida university presidential searches. Board of Governors Chair and UF alumnus Alan Levine has encouraged alumni to withhold judgment and give Bell an opportunity to explain his positions.

Bell’s candidacy now moves to the next phase of the selection process, where he will face additional scrutiny from the UF Board of Trustees and university stakeholders. The university has not announced a timeline for final approval of his appointment.
