NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE β€” The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation announced Monday it is accepting applications for fall semester forensic science internships at its Nashville and Jackson laboratories, offering college students hands-on experience in criminal investigation science.

The internship program provides opportunities at two locations: the TBI Nashville Laboratory in Davidson County and the TBI Jackson Laboratory in Madison County. Applications opened May 6 and will remain available through June 16, according to the agency’s announcement.

Program Requirements and Responsibilities

Interns will contribute to the TBI’s mission of “Truth, Bravery, and Integrity” by participating in hands-on scientific testing while assisting professional forensic scientists. The positions involve work across multiple forensic disciplines including Latent Prints, Microanalysis, Breath Alcohol Calibration, Toxicology, Forensic Chemistry, Forensic Biology/CODIS, and Firearms analysis.

Daily responsibilities include administrative and technical tasks such as maintaining supplies, data entry, preparing reagents, and supporting instrument maintenance. Interns must model ethical behavior, respect confidentiality requirements, and follow established protocols to maintain the laboratory’s culture of trust and scientific credibility.

Eligibility and Academic Requirements

Applicants must be college juniors or seniors majoring in natural or physical science, forensic science, or other forensic-related fields. A minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 is required for consideration.

Other requirements include being at least 18 years old, providing recommendation letters from faculty members in the science department, and completing a minimum of eighteen semester hours in Chemistry coursework.

Application Process

The internships offer school credit rather than monetary compensation. Interested candidates can apply through the Tennessee Department of Human Resources website at www.tn.gov/careers under job opening number 77437.

For more information about the program, students can contact the TBI Human Resources Unit at TBI.Intern@tbi.tn.gov. The application period runs for six weeks, closing on June 16.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation operates multiple forensic laboratories across the state to support criminal investigations and provide scientific analysis for law enforcement agencies throughout Tennessee.
