MEMPHIS, TENNESSEE β€” The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is examining a fatal officer-involved shooting that took place Wednesday morning when a Drug Enforcement Administration agent shot and killed a man during a warrant service operation.

At approximately 9:30 a.m., members of the Memphis Safe Task Force arrived in the 2600 block of North Hollywood to serve a state arrest warrant. According to preliminary information from the TBI, the subject reached for a gun in his waistband upon their arrival, prompting one DEA agent to fire his weapon.

The man struck by gunfire was identified as Darrin Pigram, born February 7, 1985. Pigram was transported to a local hospital where he was later pronounced deceased. No law enforcement personnel sustained injuries during the incident.

Investigation Process

The investigation was requested by 30th Judicial District Attorney General Steve Mulroy. TBI agents are working independently to determine the sequence of events that led to the shooting, including collecting evidence and conducting interviews with witnesses and involved parties.

The investigative findings will be shared with the District Attorney General for review and consideration once the probe is complete. The TBI serves solely as fact-finders in these cases and does not determine whether an officer’s actions were justified.

Agency Protocols

According to TBI policy, the bureau does not identify officers involved in these types of incidents. The agency refers questions about officer identification to the respective department to answer as deemed appropriate.

The decision regarding whether the shooting was justified rests with the District Attorney General who requested TBI’s involvement in the case. This standard protocol ensures an independent review process for all officer-involved shooting incidents.

The Memphis Safe Task Force includes multiple law enforcement agencies working together on drug enforcement and public safety operations. The task force was serving a state arrest warrant when the fatal encounter occurred.

Updates on the investigation will be posted online at TBINewsroom.com as they become available. The TBI has not released additional details about the nature of the arrest warrant or the specific circumstances that led to the confrontation.
