HARRISBURG, PENNSYLVANIA β€” U.S. Sen. Dave McCormick highlighted artificial intelligence as a transformative period in human history during remarks to state leaders Monday, comparing the technology’s potential impact to the revolutionary changes brought by the printing press in the 1400s.

Speaking at the Pennsylvania Press Club in Harrisburg, the first-term Republican senator urged Pennsylvania stakeholders to embrace technological change reshaping society at an accelerated pace.

“We are at the point of the most consequential change in all of our lifetimes,” McCormick told the assembled leaders. “I would go so far to say, and this is a big statement, it’s the most consequential moment of change in human history.”

Pennsylvania’s Strategic Advantages

McCormick argued that Pennsylvania is “uniquely positioned to be at the forefront of this moment” and positioned to capitalize on artificial intelligence developments. He specifically cited the state’s natural resources as assets for powering the energy-intensive infrastructure required for AI operations.

The senator highlighted data centers as critical components of the AI ecosystem, describing them as warehouse-like facilities containing thousands of computers that consume electricity comparable to small cities. These centers provide the computing capacity needed for AI applications while also supporting streaming services and e-commerce platforms.

However, McCormick acknowledged that data center construction has become increasingly controversial among local elected officials despite support from state-level leaders like himself.

Industry Transformation Opportunities

Beyond energy infrastructure, McCormick identified defense and life sciences as sectors primed for significant transformation through AI integration. He suggested these industries represent major opportunities for Pennsylvania as technological adaptation accelerates across various fields.

“We have to embrace it; we have to lean into it. We have to ensure that Pennsylvania remains at the forefront of the most profoundly changing, the most exciting time in human history,” McCormick said.

The senator described artificial intelligence as an inevitable technological development while acknowledging both positive and negative implications. He revealed that he personally uses “all” available AI models and encourages his staff to adopt the technology “as a way to just try to get faster.”

Embracing Technological Change

When questioned about his optimistic perspective on AI development, McCormick compared the technology’s inevitability to natural phenomena. “It’s a little bit like saying, ‘Are you optimistic about the sun coming up,'” he said, according to the Pennsylvania Capital-Star.

The senator’s remarks come as Pennsylvania positions itself to compete for AI-related economic development opportunities. State officials have increasingly promoted Pennsylvania’s energy resources, educated workforce, and strategic location as advantages in attracting technology companies and data center investments.

McCormick’s emphasis on embracing rapid technological change reflects broader discussions among policymakers about how states can adapt to and benefit from artificial intelligence advancement while addressing associated challenges including energy consumption, workforce displacement, and regulatory concerns.
