Bucks County Commissioner Harvie Faces Primary Challenge for Pa.’s 1st District
Bucks County Commissioner Bob Harvie faces former congressional science advisor Lucia Simonelli in the Democratic primary to challenge Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick.

DOYLESTOWN, PENNSYLVANIA β Bucks County Commissioner Bob Harvie will face former congressional science advisor Lucia Simonelli in next week’s Democratic primary to determine who will challenge Republican U.S. Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick for Pennsylvania’s 1st Congressional District seat this November.
The Democratic Party has endorsed Harvie, who serves as vice-chair of the Bucks County board of commissioners and helped tip the three-person board to a Democratic majority for the first time ever in 2019. Simonelli is running without party support but hopes to secure voter approval in the May 19 primary.
Harvie Touts Bipartisan Record
Harvie brings nearly two decades of experience as a Falls Township supervisor, including 12 years as chair, to his congressional campaign. He points to his record of bipartisan collaboration on improving access to human services, law enforcement training, and sustainability initiatives.
“We’ve done it unanimously, because ultimately, people want the government that works,” Harvie told the Pennsylvania Capital-Star last week. “They’re tired of the bickering, they’re tired of the finger pointing. They just want a government that’s going to work for them and make their lives better.”
The commissioner argues his proven ability to work across party lines represents what voters want to see in Washington, D.C., according to his interview with the news outlet.
Simonelli Banks on Progressive Energy
Simonelli, who previously served as a congressional science advisor, is positioning her campaign around community excitement and progressive messaging rather than matching Fitzpatrick’s fundraising totals.
“It’s less about, ‘we need to fundraise to match the amount that’s in his campaign coffers,'” she said. “It’s that ‘we need to out-excite people.'”
Simonelli told the Capital-Star that the excitement and community involvement behind her progressive campaign, along with her clarity of message, distinguish her from both Harvie and Fitzpatrick.
Competitive District Spans Urban and Rural Areas
The 1st Congressional District encompasses all of Bucks County and a slice of Montgomery County along their shared border. The district stretches from Philadelphia suburbs in the south to rural communities and rolling farms in the north, creating a diverse electoral area.
Fitzpatrick has represented the district for nearly a decade, making it a key target for Democrats seeking to expand their congressional delegation. The winner of the Democratic primary will face the Republican incumbent in what is expected to be a closely watched general election contest.
Primary voting is scheduled for May 19, with polls opening at 7 a.m. and closing at 8 p.m. throughout Pennsylvania.
