Rep. Chuck Edwards Under House Ethics Investigation for Alleged Misconduct
Second-term GOP congressman faces ethics probe over alleged inappropriate conduct toward staffers as he battles for reelection in key swing district.

RALEIGH, NORTH CAROLINA β Representative Chuck Edwards, a Republican congressman from North Carolina, is under a House Ethics Committee investigation over allegations of inappropriate conduct toward two young female staffers, according to his spokesman and media reports.
Edwards’ campaign strategist Paul Shumaker confirmed the investigation to NC Newsline, describing it as “nothing about nothing” and claiming the allegations are false. The second-term congressman represents western North Carolina in the U.S. House of Representatives.
Investigation Details
The ethics probe was first reported by Axios, which detailed allegations of inappropriate conduct toward two young female staffers. NC Newsline has not independently confirmed the specific details of the investigation reported by Axios.
Edwards dismissed the claims in a statement, characterizing them as politically motivated attacks. “I welcome any investigation, given the professionalism my staff has demonstrated and my commitment to serving the people of Western North Carolina,” Edwards said.
“Given the current political environment we are facing in our nation, it comes as no surprise that others with their own political agendas will attempt to raise false accusations to create news stories,” the congressman added.
Political Implications
The investigation arises as Edwards faces a potentially competitive reelection campaign in November that could impact Republican control of the House of Representatives in 2027. His Democratic challenger, farmer Jamie Ager, has received early backing from the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.
The seat is included on the DCCC’s list of “districts in play” for 2026, according to NC Newsline reporting. Ager received the committee’s endorsement following her performance in the Democratic primary earlier this year.
Broader Ethics Issues in Congress
Edwards’ investigation follows a series of high-profile ethical scandals that have affected the House of Representatives, leading to three congressional resignations. Representative Eric Swalwell, a California Democrat, dropped out of the California governor’s race and resigned from Congress on April 14 following accusations of sexual misconduct, which he denies.
Representative Tony Gonzales, a Texas Republican, also resigned on April 14 after admitting to an affair with a staffer who subsequently died by suicide. The wave of resignations has highlighted ongoing concerns about workplace conduct and ethical standards among House members.
The House Ethics Committee has not released any public statements regarding the timeline or scope of the Edwards investigation. House ethics investigations typically remain confidential until the committee determines whether formal charges should be pursued.
