RALEIGH, NORTH CAROLINA β€” Multiple frost advisories and freeze warnings were in effect across western and northwestern North Carolina through 9:00 AM EDT Sunday morning, with temperatures expected to drop as low as 28 degrees in some areas.

The National Weather Service issued the most severe warnings for portions of northwest North Carolina, predicting sub-freezing temperatures as low as 28 degrees from midnight Saturday through 9:00 AM Sunday. The warning covered areas extending into southwest and west central Virginia and southeast West Virginia.

Frost advisories covered broader sections of north central and northwest North Carolina, with temperatures forecast to reach as low as 33 degrees. A separate frost advisory from the National Weather Service office in Morristown, Tennessee, addressed portions of southwest North Carolina, predicting temperatures around or slightly below 36 degrees.

Agricultural and Garden Impacts Expected

The unseasonably cold temperatures pose risks to vegetation across the affected regions. According to the National Weather Service, frost and freeze conditions could kill crops and other sensitive vegetation in areas under the freeze warning.

Gardeners and farmers were advised that sensitive outdoor plants may be killed if left uncovered during the overnight hours. The weather service also warned that unprotected outdoor plumbing could sustain damage from the freezing conditions.

Multiple Weather Service Offices Issue Coordinated Alerts

The warnings and advisories were issued by multiple National Weather Service offices, reflecting the widespread nature of the cold snap. The Blacksburg, Virginia office issued both frost advisories and freeze warnings on May 2, with the most recent updates coming at 7:24 PM EDT.

A separate frost advisory from the Morristown, Tennessee office was issued at 12:42 PM EDT on May 2, covering the southernmost portions of the affected area in North Carolina. All advisories and warnings were scheduled to expire at 9:00 AM EDT on Sunday morning.

The late-season cold snap represents an unusual weather pattern for early May, when temperatures typically remain well above freezing across North Carolina. Residents in affected areas were encouraged to cover sensitive plants and protect exposed outdoor plumbing to minimize potential damage from the overnight freeze conditions.
