SALINE TOWNSHIP, MICHIGAN β€” Governor Gretchen Whitmer attended the groundbreaking ceremony for a large OpenAI-Oracle data center on Monday, standing alongside business leaders including OpenAI CEO Sam Altman despite ongoing community resistance to the project.

The ceremony marked the official start of construction for the controversial data center that has faced opposition from local residents for nearly a year. Whitmer posed for photographs with executives at the Saline Township event, which was covered by Michigan Public Radio Network photographer Colin Jackson.

Community Concerns Continue

Local residents have spent most of the past year raising concerns about the project’s environmental impact and effects on local control of public resources. The data center has become a contentious issue in the Ann Arbor area, with opponents questioning the development’s effects on the community.

Attorney General Dana Nessel previously joined Ann Arbor area lawmakers and environmentalists in demanding scrutiny of a related DTE data center deal. The project has also faced legal challenges, with the data center developer taking the small farming community to court over local control issues.

Political Implications

The appearance comes more than a year after Whitmer faced criticism for a widely circulated photograph from April 2025 showing her in the Oval Office raising a blue folder, an image that became symbolic of perceived political positioning during Trump’s return to the presidency.

Whitmer had previously built her political brand around fighting for ordinary Michiganders, but critics argue her support for the data center project represents a shift toward backing corporate interests over community concerns. The governor has become one of the Saline Township project’s most vocal supporters despite local opposition.

The OpenAI-Oracle data center represents a significant technology infrastructure investment in southeastern Michigan, though specific details about the facility’s size, timeline, and economic impact were not immediately available from Monday’s ceremony.
