GAINESVILLE, FLORIDA β€” University of Florida trustees unanimously endorsed Stuart Bell on Wednesday, advancing the former University of Alabama president toward becoming UF’s first permanent president since summer 2024.

Bell spent two hours fielding questions from trustees on topics including fundraising, construction projects, student achievement, athletics, and diversity, equity and inclusion policies that complicated the previous presidential search.

Bell Pledges Commitment to Excellence

The presidential candidate emphasized Florida’s unique investment in higher education during his presentation to the board.

“Looking at what the University of Florida is doing, their goals based on merit, their goals based on excellence, their goals based on achievement. That is the environment that I want to work in,” Bell said. “I want to take a university from being a great university to being the very best university.”

Bell reiterated his statement from last week that he is not seeking the position to bring “woke” policies back to campus, demonstrating his alignment with current state higher education policies.

Search Process Defended Amid Criticism

Mori Hosseini, the long-serving chair of the UF board of trustees, praised Bell’s performance during the questioning session, saying he did an “amazing job” answering trustee inquiries.

Rahul Patel, who chairs the presidential search committee and serves as vice chair of the UF board, addressed public criticism about the search process’s transparency. “To suggest that we and our committee needed to be more transparent would be to suggest that our committee violate Florida law,” Patel said.

The search has drawn scrutiny from high-profile officials, including U.S. Sen. Rick Scott, who wrote a letter to UF last month criticizing the process.

Athletic Experience in Changing Environment

Bell brings extensive experience from leading two prominent athletic institutions. He previously served as president of both the University of Alabama and the Southeastern Conference, organizations widely recognized among college football’s elite programs.

With college athletics experiencing significant changes through name, image and likeness compensation for athletes and increased transfer portal activity, Bell positioned himself as equipped to navigate these challenges. He presented trustees with his strategy for managing UF’s athletic programs in this evolving environment.

The state’s investment in higher education represents a “rare” opportunity, according to Bell, who emphasized his commitment to advancing UF’s academic standing through merit-based excellence and achievement-focused initiatives.
