COLUMBUS, OHIO β€” More than 100 FBI agents raided an Ohio voter registration organization earlier this month, targeting a group that has spent two decades registering racial minorities, formerly incarcerated individuals, and college students to vote, according to the Ohio Capital Journal.

The raid is one of several recent federal actions in Ohio that voting rights advocates say amount to a coordinated effort to suppress voter participation ahead of the November 3 midterm elections.

Federal Actions Target Ohio Voting Rights Efforts

The FBI raid on the voter registration group came as the Trump administration also moved on a separate front, with the Department of Justice intervening in a federal lawsuit to defend an Ohio law requiring voters to provide documentary proof of citizenship when they register. Voting rights advocates argue that requirement will prevent thousands of eligible citizens from casting ballots.

That DOJ intervention occurred last week, according to the Ohio Capital Journal, which first reported the overlapping federal actions. The outlet cited Democracy Docket in documenting the DOJ’s involvement in the documentary proof of citizenship lawsuit.

President Donald Trump also pressed Ohio Republicans to make voter ID a central issue in the upcoming midterms, according to reporting by 13ABC. Ohio already has one of the strictest voter ID laws in the country. Republican state lawmakers responded by rushing a constitutional amendment to the November 3 ballot that would enshrine that existing law in the state constitution.

Ohio Republicans Hold Dominant Grip on State Government

Ohio is a reliably Republican state where Trump has won three consecutive elections. The GOP currently holds gerrymandered supermajorities in both chambers of the state legislature, controls all statewide offices, and holds a 6-1 majority on the Ohio Supreme Court.

Despite that dominance, federal authorities and Republican lawmakers have moved aggressively on multiple voting-related fronts in the weeks leading up to the fall midterm elections.

Voting Rights Groups Sound Alarm

The targeted voter registration group had operated for approximately two decades, focusing its efforts on registering populations that historically face barriers to political participation, including racial minorities and people who were formerly incarcerated, before federal agents descended on its offices.

The Ohio Capital Journal characterized the sequence of events β€” the FBI raid, the DOJ intervention in the citizenship proof lawsuit, and the rushed voter ID constitutional amendment β€” as a pattern of federal and state action designed to reduce electoral participation ahead of the November contest.

No charges had been publicly announced against the voter registration group as of the Ohio Capital Journal’s June 17 reporting. The FBI and the Department of Justice had not issued public statements detailing the basis for the raid, according to the outlet.
