DeSantis Orders Flags Lowered to Honor Late Congressman Bill Posey
Gov. DeSantis orders flags lowered Saturday at Capitol, Brevard courthouse, and Palm Bay City Hall to honor the late Rep. Bill Posey, who served 16 years in Congress.

TALLAHASSEE, FLORIDA β Governor Ron DeSantis has ordered flags at the Florida Capitol, Brevard County Courthouse, and Palm Bay City Hall to be lowered to half-staff on Saturday to honor former U.S. Representative Bill Posey, who died last month at age 78.
The Republican congressman served Florida’s Space Coast region for 16 years in the U.S. House of Representatives before his death in May. Prior to his congressional career, Posey dedicated 16 years to the Florida Legislature, serving eight years in each chamber.
Governor Honors Legacy of Service
In his Friday directive, DeSantis praised Posey’s commitment to public service. “Former Representative Posey lived an honorable life of service and always displayed his unwavering dedication to the citizens of Florida. Our prayers go out to his family,” the governor wrote.
The flag-lowering ceremony will take place specifically at three locations significant to Posey’s career: the state Capitol in Tallahassee, the Brevard County Courthouse, and Palm Bay City Hall, reflecting his deep ties to the Space Coast community he represented.
Congressional Career and Conservative Advocacy
During his time in Congress, Posey established himself as a vocal advocate for conservative principles and government accountability. He was among a group of Republican representatives who filed a federal lawsuit against the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention during the COVID-19 pandemic, seeking to end mask mandates for air travel.
The lawsuit was filed in federal court in Western Kentucky, though the case became moot when a Florida judge invalidated the federal mask rule for transportation.
U.S. Representative Mike Haridopolos, also a Republican, paid tribute to his former colleague following Posey’s death. “Throughout his career, he earned a reputation as a principled conservative, a steadfast advocate for fiscal responsibility and government transparency, and a tireless supporter of America’s space program and the communities he proudly represented along Florida’s Space Coast,” Haridopolos posted on social media.
Environmental and Space Coast Advocacy
Beyond his work on fiscal and transparency issues, Posey demonstrated a commitment to environmental protection as cofounder of the Congressional Estuary Caucus. This bipartisan group focused on protecting and preserving America’s estuary systems, which was particularly relevant to his coastal Florida district.
His advocacy for America’s space program reflected the interests of his constituents along Florida’s Space Coast, where NASA’s Kennedy Space Center serves as a major economic driver and source of regional pride.
The Saturday flag ceremony will mark a formal state recognition of Posey’s decades of public service, from his early years in the Florida statehouse through his lengthy tenure representing Florida’s interests in Washington, D.C.
