ESCANABA, MICHIGAN β€” The National Weather Service has issued a beach hazards statement for Southern Schoolcraft County, warning of dangerous swimming conditions due to high wave action and strong rip currents through 2:00 PM today.

The alert, issued at 2:53 AM by the NWS Marquette office, warns that high wave action and dangerous currents will create life-threatening swimming conditions from 6:00 AM through 2:00 PM EDT. Waves occurring in rapid succession can quickly tire swimmers, according to the weather service.

High-Risk Areas Identified

Officials specifically identified areas near Lakeview Park and Seul Choix Point as locations where current-related fatalities and rescues have occurred during similar wave conditions in the past. These areas pose particular risks to swimmers and beachgoers during today’s hazardous conditions.

The weather service emphasized that the dangerous swimming conditions result from a combination of high wave action and strong rip currents affecting the Lake Michigan shoreline in the region.

Safety Precautions Urged

The hazardous conditions are expected to persist throughout the morning and early afternoon hours. The National Weather Service advises extreme caution for anyone considering water activities along the affected shoreline.

Rip currents can pull swimmers away from shore quickly and unexpectedly, while high waves create additional dangers for those in or near the water. The combination of these conditions has historically led to water rescues and fatalities in the specific areas mentioned in the advisory.

The beach hazards statement remains in effect until 2:00 PM EDT today, covering the entirety of Southern Schoolcraft County’s Lake Michigan coastline. Weather officials will continue monitoring conditions throughout the day.
