Rep. Tlaib Endorses Lawrence in Competitive Michigan 7th District Race
Rep. Rashida Tlaib becomes first member of Congress to endorse in the three-way Democratic primary for Michigan’s competitive 7th District seat.

DETROIT, MICHIGAN β U.S. Rep. Rashida Tlaib announced her endorsement of Lansing-area political organizer William Lawrence in the Democratic primary for Michigan’s 7th Congressional District, becoming the first member of Congress to weigh in on one of the nation’s most competitive races.
The Detroit Democrat threw her support behind Lawrence as three candidates compete for the Democratic nomination in the politically significant district. Tlaib praised Lawrence as representing “the kind of courageous leadership that we all need right now.”
“Will has been on the frontlines in protecting our communities. He helped protect our unhoused neighbors against measures that would have violated our human rights,” Tlaib said. “Will has proven to do the work without the title. I’m proud to endorse Will because he will take on political corruption, so we can win quality healthcare and affordable housing and put a stop to endless wars.”
Lawrence Builds Progressive Coalition
Beyond Tlaib’s endorsement, Lawrence has secured backing from several progressive organizations. The Michigan 7 chapter of Indivisible, the Working Families Party, and The People’s Coalition have all announced their support for his candidacy.
Lawrence faces two other Democratic candidates in the primary: former Ambassador to Ukraine Bridget Brink and retired Navy SEAL Matt Maasdam. The winner will compete in what political observers consider one of the most competitive congressional districts nationwide.
Competing Endorsements Shape Primary
While Lawrence has garnered progressive support, his opponents have built their own coalitions. Brink has won endorsements from several Michigan lawmakers, including former House Speaker Joe Tate of Detroit, along with backing from the Michigan Education Association and EMILYs List.
Maasdam has received support from End Citizens United, according to previous reporting. The diverse endorsement patterns reflect the varied political constituencies within the 7th District.
Tlaib’s endorsement carries significant weight in Michigan Democratic politics, particularly among progressive voters who supported her own congressional campaigns. Her backing of Lawrence signals the ideological direction she believes the party should take in the competitive district.
The 7th Congressional District has drawn national attention due to its competitive nature, with both parties viewing it as a potential pickup opportunity. The Democratic primary outcome could influence the party’s chances in the general election.
