CAPE HATTERAS, NORTH CAROLINA β€” The National Weather Service has issued a beach hazards statement warning of dangerous rip currents along North Carolina’s Outer Banks today, with conditions expected to persist through this evening.

The warning affects beaches north of Cape Hatteras and remains in effect from 8 AM EDT through 8:00 PM EDT on April 30, according to the Newport/Morehead City office of the National Weather Service.

Peak Danger Hours Identified

Officials warn that the most hazardous conditions are likely to occur around low tide, which is scheduled for approximately 1 PM today. The strongest rip currents typically develop within a couple hours on either side of low tide, making the early afternoon particularly dangerous for beachgoers.

Rip currents pose a serious threat to swimmers of all skill levels, as these powerful water channels can quickly sweep even experienced swimmers away from shore into deeper waters.

Safety Recommendations for Beachgoers

The National Weather Service advises visitors to exercise extreme caution when entering the water today. Swimmers should stay close to lifeguarded areas when possible and avoid venturing into the ocean during peak risk hours around low tide.

Rip currents are responsible for numerous ocean rescues each year along North Carolina’s coast, particularly during periods of increased wave activity and changing tidal conditions.

Current Weather Conditions

The beach hazards statement was issued at 3:07 AM EDT on April 30 by the National Weather Service’s Newport/Morehead City office, which monitors coastal conditions for much of North Carolina’s central and southern Outer Banks region.

Beachgoers planning to visit the affected areas are encouraged to check current conditions and speak with local lifeguards before entering the water. The warning remains active until 8:00 PM EDT tonight.
