FAYETTEVILLE β€” A woman died in a house fire early Tuesday morning on Empress Lane, prompting an investigation by Fayetteville police and fire officials.

Firefighters responded to the blaze around 3:15 a.m. and found heavy smoke and flames coming from the single-story residence, according to Fayetteville Fire Department spokesman Battalion Chief John Mitchell. Crews discovered the victim inside the home during their search and rescue operations.

The woman, whose identity has not been released pending notification of family members, was pronounced dead at the scene. She was the sole occupant of the residence, officials said.

Fire Suppression and Investigation

Fire crews brought the blaze under control within 45 minutes, but the home sustained significant damage to the interior and roof structure. No other injuries were reported among firefighters or neighbors.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Fayetteville Fire Department’s Fire Investigation Unit working alongside Fayetteville Police Department detectives. Officials have not ruled out any potential causes at this time.

“We are conducting a thorough investigation to determine the origin and cause of this tragic fire,” Mitchell said during a press briefing Tuesday afternoon.

Neighborhood Impact

The fire prompted temporary evacuations of two adjacent homes as a precaution, but residents were allowed to return once the scene was secured. Cumberland County Emergency Services assisted with temporary shelter coordination, though it was ultimately not needed.

Empress Lane remained partially closed for several hours Tuesday morning while investigators processed the scene and fire crews completed overhaul operations. The road has since reopened to traffic.

The American Red Cross responded to provide assistance with temporary housing arrangements for displaced residents, according to agency spokesman David Rodriguez.

This marks the first fire fatality in Fayetteville this year. In 2023, the city recorded three fire-related deaths, according to fire department statistics.

The investigation is ongoing, and officials expect to release additional information as it becomes available. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the Fayetteville Fire Department at 910-433-1FD1.
