KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI β€” Three rivers across western Missouri are expected to reach or exceed flood stage by Saturday evening as forecasted rainfall and runoff from recent precipitation drive water levels to dangerous heights, according to hydrologic outlooks issued by the National Weather Service Kansas City/Pleasant Hill office.

The South Grand River at Urich is projected to reach 24.4 feet at 7 PM Saturday, surpassing the 24.0-foot flood stage. The river currently stands at 8.7 feet as of 8 PM Thursday, indicating a significant rise expected over the next two days.

Big Creek at Blairstown is forecast to crest at 22.7 feet by 7 AM Saturday, well above its 20.0-foot flood stage. The creek measured 17.1 feet at 8 PM Thursday, already approaching concerning levels.

Crooked River Nears Critical Threshold

The Crooked River near Richmond is expected to reach 19.2 feet at 1 AM Saturday, just eight-tenths of a foot below its 20.0-foot flood stage. Current readings show the river at 7.6 feet as of 7 PM Thursday.

All three hydrologic outlooks were issued Thursday evening between 8:30 PM and 8:32 PM CDT, based on forecast rainfall for the next 24 hours and estimated runoff from earlier precipitation events.

Forecasts Subject to Change

The National Weather Service cautioned that actual crest levels may vary depending on whether rainfall and runoff exceed or fall short of current projections. Weather officials noted that additional statements and possible flood warnings may be issued as more information becomes available.

The South Grand River represents the most immediate concern, with forecasters predicting the water level will exceed flood stage by nearly half a foot. The rapid rise from Thursday evening’s 8.7 feet to Saturday’s projected 24.4 feet demonstrates the significant impact expected rainfall will have on regional waterways.

Weekend Timeline

According to National Weather Service projections, the most critical period will occur between Saturday morning and evening. Big Creek at Blairstown is expected to reach its peak first at 7 AM Saturday, followed by the Crooked River near Richmond at 1 AM Saturday, and the South Grand River at Urich at 7 PM Saturday.

By Sunday at 1 AM, water levels are forecast to begin receding, with the Crooked River near Richmond expected to drop to 7.2 feet, significantly below flood stage. This rapid rise and fall pattern is typical of flash flooding events driven by heavy rainfall over short periods.

Residents near these waterways should monitor conditions closely and prepare for potential flooding impacts throughout the weekend. Local emergency management agencies typically recommend having evacuation plans ready when rivers approach flood stage, particularly in low-lying areas adjacent to these waterways.
