TBI Investigates Fatal Officer-Involved Shooting in Knox County
TBI agents investigate fatal shooting after Knox County deputies encounter armed motorcyclist during traffic stop on Clinton Highway.

KNOXVILLE, TENNESSEE β Tennessee Bureau of Investigation agents are conducting an independent investigation into a fatal officer-involved shooting that occurred during a traffic stop early Tuesday morning in Knox County.
The shooting took place just before 2:30 a.m. when Knox County Sheriff’s Office deputies stopped a small motorcycle in the 4000 block of Clinton Highway. Deputies initiated the traffic stop after observing the motorcycle being operated without headlights, a license plate, and the driver was not wearing a helmet.
According to preliminary information from the TBI, the situation escalated when the motorcyclist presented a knife during the traffic stop. One deputy responded by firing shots, striking the man. The individual was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Investigation Details
The investigation was launched at the request of 6th Judicial District Attorney General Charme Allen. No deputies sustained injuries during the incident, according to the TBI.
TBI agents are working to independently establish the sequence of events that led to the shooting. Their investigation includes collecting physical evidence from the scene and conducting interviews with witnesses and involved parties.
Review Process
The investigative findings will be shared with District Attorney General Allen for her review and consideration once the investigation is complete. The TBI serves exclusively as fact-finders in officer-involved shooting cases and does not make determinations about whether an officer’s actions were justified.
That decision rests with the district attorney who requested the TBI’s involvement in the case. The bureau maintains a policy of not identifying officers involved in such incidents, instead referring those inquiries to the respective law enforcement department.
The Knox County Sheriff’s Office has not yet released additional details about the deputy or deputies involved in the shooting. The identity of the deceased motorcyclist has also not been disclosed pending notification of family members.
Any updates regarding this ongoing investigation will be posted on the TBI’s official website at TBINewsroom.com as they become available.
