Ohio Launches Statewide Attendance Dashboard to Combat Chronic Absenteeism
Ohio launches weekly-updating attendance tracker as state grapples with over 25% chronic absence rate among K-12 students.
COLUMBUS, OHIO — Governor Mike DeWine and Department of Education and Workforce Director Stephen Dackin announced the launch of a statewide Attendance Dashboard to address chronic absenteeism in Ohio’s K-12 public schools, where more than 25% of students were chronically absent last year.
The new online tool compiles self-reported data from districts and schools statewide, providing administrators, parents, and taxpayers with detailed attendance patterns down to individual grade levels. Students in Ohio are classified as chronically absent when they miss at least 10% of the minimum required school hours annually, including both excused and unexcused absences.
Dashboard Features and Capabilities
The attendance tracking system organizes data in a trend line format, allowing users to view weekly percentages of statewide absenteeism. The platform offers customizable features for comparing specific absentee rates between districts and individual schools at the grade level.
Dackin said the comparison feature was designed to enable districts to learn from one another through data analysis. The dashboard updates weekly as more schools across the state submit their attendance information.
Addressing a Statewide Challenge
The initiative responds to Ohio’s attendance crisis, where chronically absent students miss nearly one month of school annually. According to officials, Ohio becomes the second state to implement a system with such frequent data updates.
“When students are not in school they are not learning, and the consequences are significant,” DeWine said. “Chronic absence isn’t just a school problem, it is a community problem, it is a state problem. It is also a parent problem.”
Part of DeWine’s Final Term Agenda
The dashboard launch aligns with DeWine’s emphasis on improving children’s lives, which he highlighted during his March State of the State address. The attendance initiative represents another component of the governor’s policy agenda during his final stretch in office.
The online tool aims to provide transparency in tracking attendance trends while giving school administrators and families the data needed to identify and address patterns of chronic absenteeism across Ohio’s educational system.
