PARADISE, MICHIGAN β€” The National Weather Service issued a flood advisory Friday for the Tahquamenon River near Paradise, warning that elevated water levels caused by rain and snowmelt will continue until further notice.

The advisory, issued at 12:52 p.m. Friday by the NWS Marquette office, affects Luce County as rain falls on deep snow cover, causing accelerated melting and rapidly rising river flows that have reached critical levels.

Current River Conditions

At 11:45 a.m. Friday, the Tahquamenon River measured 9.9 feet, nearly four-tenths of a foot above the 9.5-foot bankfull stage. The river exceeded its action stage of 9.5 feet but remains below the 10.0-foot flood stage.

Weather service officials noted that at 10.3 feet, the river would reach the high water mark established in May 1960. No significant flooding impacts are known for river heights at or below this historic level.

Weather Conditions and Outlook

The combination of rainfall and snowmelt continues to drive the elevated water levels in the region. Rain falling on the primed snowpack has accelerated the melting process, leading to the rapid increase in river flows.

No forecast is currently available for this specific river location, according to the weather service advisory. Officials continue monitoring conditions as the situation develops.

Safety Precautions

Residents and visitors in the Paradise area should exercise caution near the Tahquamenon River and avoid entering flood waters. The National Weather Service emphasizes that even shallow moving water can be dangerous.

The advisory remains in effect until further notice as weather officials continue tracking conditions along the river system. Updates will be provided as new information becomes available.
