PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA — The National Weather Service issued special weather statements Wednesday morning warning of elevated wildfire risk across eastern Pennsylvania as dry and windy conditions create dangerous fire spread potential throughout the afternoon.
Minimum relative humidity values will drop to 25 to 35 percent this afternoon, accompanied by temperatures rising into the 70s and northwest winds of 10 to 15 mph gusting up to 25 mph, according to forecasters. The combination of these conditions could support rapid fire spread that would quickly become difficult to control.
Immediate Fire Danger Across Region
The weather service warned that fires igniting in dry grasses and tree litter have the potential to spread rapidly under Wednesday’s conditions. Two separate alerts were issued by NWS offices in State College and Mount Holly, covering areas east of US-15 in Pennsylvania.
Wind gusts between 15 and 20 mph will accompany the low humidity levels, creating prime conditions for any fires that start to grow quickly out of control. Officials emphasized that even small ignition sources pose significant risks under these weather patterns.
Safety Precautions Urged for Residents
Residents are urged to exercise extreme caution when handling potential ignition sources including machinery, cigarettes, matches, and outdoor equipment. The weather service strongly discourages any outdoor burning activities during the elevated risk period.
Officials specifically warned about using lawn care equipment and other machinery outdoors that could produce sparks coming into contact with dry ground conditions. Proper disposal and extinguishing of smoking materials such as cigarette butts is also critical.
The forecast was developed in coordination with state fire officials and considers current meteorological, fuel, and land conditions across the affected areas.

Fire weather conditions should improve during evening hours as winds diminish and relative humidity increases, according to forecasters. The elevated risk period is primarily focused on Wednesday afternoon when the combination of factors creates the most dangerous conditions.
