PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA β€” The National Weather Service has issued freeze watches for Philadelphia and Delaware Counties as sub-freezing temperatures as low as 27 degrees are possible from late Monday night through Tuesday morning.

The watches were issued Saturday at 1:46 PM EDT and remain in effect until Tuesday at 9:00 AM EDT, according to the National Weather Service Mount Holly office. The warning affects both Philadelphia and Delaware Counties in Pennsylvania, as well as New Castle County in Delaware.

Frost and freeze conditions could damage crops and other sensitive vegetation, and may harm unprotected outdoor plumbing, weather officials warned.

Widespread Regional Impact

The freeze threat extends well beyond Philadelphia, with multiple counties across Pennsylvania and New Jersey under various weather advisories. Carbon and Monroe Counties are under the most severe warnings, with a freeze warning in effect from 11 PM Saturday evening to 10 AM EDT Monday for temperatures as low as 24 degrees.

A freeze watch for those same counties warns of even more dangerous conditions from late Monday night through Tuesday morning, with sub-freezing temperatures as low as 19 degrees possible.

In northern Pennsylvania, Northampton County is under both a frost advisory and freeze watch. The frost advisory runs from 2 AM to 8 AM EDT Monday for temperatures as low as 34 degrees, while the freeze watch extends from late Monday night through Tuesday morning with possible temperatures as low as 24 degrees.

New Jersey Counties Also Affected

Several New Jersey counties face similar conditions, with Morris, Somerset, Warren, and Hunterdon Counties under the same frost advisory and freeze watch as Northampton County in Pennsylvania.

A broader freeze watch covers portions of central, northern, and southern New Jersey and east central and southeast Pennsylvania, with sub-freezing temperatures as low as 25 degrees possible from late Monday night through Tuesday morning.

Protection Measures Recommended

The National Weather Service emphasized the potential for significant damage to vegetation and outdoor infrastructure. Sensitive outdoor plants may be killed if left uncovered during the frost and freeze conditions.

Residents should take precautions to protect tender plants and ensure outdoor plumbing is adequately protected against freezing temperatures. The timing of the coldest temperatures during overnight and early morning hours poses particular risks to unprotected vegetation and water systems.

The multiple weather advisories highlight the unusual nature of such cold temperatures for mid-April in the Philadelphia region, requiring residents to take protective measures typically associated with earlier spring or late winter conditions.
