TALLAHASSEE, FLORIDA β€” Governor Ron DeSantis continues to withhold his proposal for reducing property taxes on homestead properties, saying he is waiting for the right moment as uncertainty grows among lawmakers about when relief might come.

A special legislative session scheduled for the last week of April will address congressional redistricting, artificial intelligence, and vaccine mandates, but property tax relief remains off the agenda. The Legislature must also approve a balanced budget by June 30, requiring another special session.

“We don’t even know where it stands, and that’s a sad commentary for the legislators not to know what’s about to happen,” said Democratic Representative Dianne Hart-Lowman of Tampa during a Wednesday night town hall meeting.

Legislative Frustration Mounts

Hart-Lowman expressed concerns about the lack of clarity surrounding the property tax issue. “We really don’t know where we are on property taxes, but I’m looking forward to talking about it because I really need our communities to understand what it’s all about,” she said.

Some Republican lawmakers have grown pessimistic about the scope of potential relief. Representative Ryan Chamberlin, R-Belleview, has launched a citizen initiative to remove all property taxes from the 2028 ballot, citing doubts about meaningful action from the current legislative process.

Other Republicans maintain urgency for immediate action. “We did our job in the House in the regular session by passing a measure that would make that a reality,” said Representative Berny Jacques, R-Seminole. “It’s now time for everyone to come to the table so we can finalize a relief measure that we can send to the voters this year.”

Governor’s Strategic Approach

DeSantis outlined his approach during a March 25 speech at Palm Beach Atlantic University’s LeMieux Center for Public Policy. “Why would I produce something that is not ripe in terms of when we’re actually going to put in front of the Legislature?” the governor asked.

“There’s obviously a strategy involved,” DeSantis added, suggesting his timing is deliberate rather than coincidental.

The governor’s reluctance to present his proposal has left lawmakers from both parties uncertain about the direction and timing of property tax relief efforts. While the House passed measures during the regular session, the lack of executive guidance has complicated efforts to move forward with comprehensive reform.

Timeline Pressures

The approaching special session will focus on redistricting following recent court decisions, along with measures addressing artificial intelligence regulation and vaccine mandate policies. Property tax relief, despite widespread legislative interest, remains unscheduled.

With the constitutional deadline for budget approval approaching June 30, lawmakers face pressure to address multiple priorities in limited time. The need for a separate budget session adds complexity to an already crowded legislative calendar.

Jacques emphasized the importance of action this year, noting that voters expect meaningful property tax relief measures to reach the ballot. The disagreement between House Republicans and the governor’s office highlights ongoing tensions over both the substance and timing of tax reform proposals.
