Ohio Rep. Beatty Wins Federal Lawsuit Reversing Kennedy Center Renaming
Ohio Rep. Joyce Beatty won a federal lawsuit forcing removal of Trump’s name from the Kennedy Center after being silenced when she tried to object to the renaming.

WASHINGTON, D.C. β Ohio U.S. Rep. Joyce Beatty successfully challenged President Donald Trump’s renaming of the Kennedy Center, securing a federal court victory that ordered the removal of Trump’s name from the iconic cultural venue and temporarily halted plans to close the facility.
The Columbus Democratic representative was one of 23 ex officio members of the Kennedy Center board who serve by virtue of their positions in federal or local government. However, Beatty had no say in the Trump name-change that resulted in the facility being called the Trump-Kennedy Center.
“Silence was not an option,” Beatty said after winning the federal lawsuit against Trump and his self-appointed board at the Kennedy Center.
Legal Challenge After Being Silenced
When Beatty attempted to object to the rebranding that defied a congressional statute, she was muted during a quorum call. The incident prompted her to file the federal lawsuit challenging the renaming.
Last Friday, a federal judge ruled in Beatty’s favor, ordering Trump’s name removed from the Kennedy Center and implementing a temporary halt to plans to shutter the building while renovations continue. The court ruling reversed what it deemed an unlawful renaming of the facility.
Significance of the Victory
Beatty’s lead counsel Nathaniel Zelinsky emphasized that the victory mattered despite its scope. The legal win represented a successful challenge to actions that violated established congressional statutes governing the Kennedy Center’s operations.
The Kennedy Center board’s decision to rename the facility had been made without input from ex officio board members like Beatty, who serve in their positions due to their roles in federal or local government. The renaming occurred despite congressional statutes that govern the center’s name and operations.
The federal court’s decision blocks the closure plans and requires the removal of Trump’s name from the cultural venue, restoring its original designation as the Kennedy Center. The ruling also addresses concerns about the legal authority behind the board’s actions and the process used to implement the name change.
