NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE β€” Tennessee real estate professionals are raising serious concerns about their industry’s political action committee, arguing that recent funding decisions violate ethical standards and undermine the communities they serve.

Two Realtors from different regions of the state have publicly questioned whether the Realtor Political Action Committee, known as RPAC, continues to reflect the values that real estate professionals claim to uphold. The criticism comes as congressional redistricting efforts have reshaped communities across Memphis and Middle Tennessee.

The real estate professionals, one serving Memphis communities and another working in Middle Tennessee, expressed shared concerns about RPAC contributions supporting what they describe as discriminatory and anti-democratic policies.

Redistricting Sparks Professional Backlash

The dismantling of a majority Black congressional district in Memphis has become a focal point for critics within the real estate industry. According to the Realtors, many residents view the redistricting as a direct attack on fair representation.

“When contributions enable racist gerrymandering, the interests of our customers and our livelihood are threatened,” the professionals stated in their critique published by Tennessee Lookout.

The Nashville region has also experienced significant redistricting changes, with the area divided into multiple congressional districts as part of the broader remapping effort.

Industry Values Under Scrutiny

For years, Tennessee Realtors have supported RPAC because housing policy, property rights, infrastructure, development and homeownership directly affect their daily work. The political action committee has historically played a role in protecting property owners and consumers.

However, the critics argue that recent political spending tied to their profession no longer aligns with publicly stated industry values. They emphasize that their concerns transcend partisan politics, focusing instead on ethics, representation and professional responsibility.

“As Realtors, we work with people from every walk of life and every corner of Tennessee,” the professionals wrote. “That is why we can no longer stay silent while money collected in our profession’s name helps fund policies attacking the very communities we serve.”

Call for Professional Reflection

The Realtors acknowledge understanding why their industry invests heavily in political advocacy and respect RPAC’s historical role. However, they believe the time has come for industry members to evaluate whether current political spending reflects their professional ethics.

Both critics come from different professional experiences and serve different parts of Tennessee, yet they share growing concerns about RPAC’s direction. They emphasize that their critique addresses fundamental questions about whether Realtors should financially support lawmakers promoting policies they view as harmful to community trust and fair representation.

The professionals stress that their opposition stems from observing how recent political contributions affect the diverse communities they serve throughout Tennessee. They argue that supporting discriminatory policies through industry funds undermines both customer relationships and professional credibility.
