PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA β€” The National Weather Service issued a heat advisory Tuesday afternoon covering Philadelphia and surrounding counties, warning residents of dangerous heat index values reaching up to 104 degrees through Friday evening.

The advisory, issued at 2:36 PM Tuesday, takes effect at 11 AM Thursday and remains in place until 8 PM Friday. Philadelphia County, along with Delaware, Eastern Chester, Eastern Montgomery, and Lower Bucks counties in Pennsylvania, will experience the highest heat index values up to 104 degrees.

Additional counties in the region face slightly lower but still dangerous conditions. Berks, Lehigh, Northampton, Upper Bucks, Western Chester, and Western Montgomery counties will see heat index values up to 102 degrees during the same timeframe.

Health Risks and Safety Concerns

The combination of hot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat illnesses, according to the weather service warning. Officials emphasize that the dangerous conditions extend beyond Pennsylvania’s borders, affecting New Castle County in Delaware and Mercer, Camden, Gloucester, and Northwestern Burlington counties in New Jersey.

The heat advisory comes as meteorologists track a weather pattern bringing oppressive conditions to the greater Philadelphia metropolitan area. The weather service warns that even brief exposure to these conditions can pose health risks to vulnerable populations.

Relief Expected from Storms

Some relief may come in the form of scattered showers and thunderstorms expected later Thursday afternoon and again Friday afternoon. However, forecasters caution that humidity levels will remain very high despite any temporary cooling from precipitation.

The weather pattern will shift significantly over the weekend as a cold front moves through the region. Meteorologists predict much less humid conditions will arrive behind the front, providing substantial relief from the oppressive heat and humidity.

Regional Impact

The heat advisory affects a large swath of the Delaware Valley region, encompassing major population centers across three states. The warning covers millions of residents in the Philadelphia metropolitan area and surrounding communities.

Weather officials issued the advisory from the National Weather Service office in Mount Holly, New Jersey, which serves the broader Delaware Valley region. The timing of the advisory allows residents nearly two days to prepare for the dangerous conditions.

Residents should take precautions during outdoor activities and ensure adequate hydration and cooling measures are available. The weather service recommends limiting outdoor exposure during peak afternoon hours when heat index values will reach their highest levels.
