GOP Early Voting Surge Threatens Democratic Senate Seat in Gwinnett County
Republicans are outvoting Democrats 2-to-1 in early voting, putting a traditionally safe Democratic state Senate seat in Gwinnett County at risk just before a special legislative session.

ATLANTA, GEORGIA β Strong Republican early voting turnout driven by competitive statewide runoffs is putting a traditionally Democratic state Senate seat in metro Atlanta at risk of flipping, raising concerns among Democrats just days before lawmakers reconvene for a special session.
Out of more than 300,000 ballots cast statewide during early voting as of Thursday, nearly 66% came from Republicans, who are outvoting Democrats by a 2-to-1 margin. The surge stems from competitive GOP primary runoffs for both the U.S. Senate and governor’s mansion.
In Gwinnett County, where Senate District 7 is located, approximately 17,000 ballots have been cast as of Thursday. Similar to statewide patterns, about two-thirds of those votes came from Republican voters.
Democratic Candidate Acknowledges Challenge
“There are headwinds. There is no denying that there are definite headwinds to close this gap,” said Democratic candidate Adrienne White, who faces Republican Aizaz Shaikh in Tuesday’s special election runoff for the metro Atlanta Senate seat.
White received about 33% of the vote in the initial three-way race against Shaikh, who earned nearly 34%, and Astrid Ross, a Democrat who captured nearly 33% of the vote. Shaikh did not respond to requests for comment Thursday.
Seat Opened by Lieutenant Governor Campaign
Tuesday’s runoff will determine who serves the remainder of former state Sen. Nabilah Parkes’ term after she stepped down to focus on her campaign for lieutenant governor. Parkes is currently in a runoff with state Sen. Josh McLaurin in that race, which represents one of four down-ballot runoff contests on the Democratic ballot.
The timing of the special election coincides with lawmakers preparing to convene for a special session, making the potential party switch particularly significant for legislative dynamics. The seat has traditionally leaned Democratic, making the competitive nature of the race notable given current voting patterns.
The Republican advantage in early voting reflects engagement driven by the high-profile statewide contests, creating an unexpected challenge for Democrats in what they previously considered a safe district. The outcome could shift the balance of power in the state Senate as legislators prepare to address key issues during the upcoming special session.
Voting continues through the weekend ahead of Tuesday’s runoff election, with final results expected to determine whether Republicans can capitalize on their early voting momentum to flip the Gwinnett County-based seat.
