Dangerous Waves and Strong Currents Threaten Lake Michigan Swimmers
A Beach Hazards Statement warns of high waves and strong currents along Berrien County’s Lake Michigan shore from 2 p.m. Monday through late tonight.

BERRIEN COUNTY, MICHIGAN β The National Weather Service office in Northern Indiana issued a Beach Hazards Statement early Monday morning for Berrien County’s Lake Michigan shoreline, warning of high wave action, strong currents, and dangerous swimming conditions expected to develop through the evening hours.
The alert, issued at 3:51 a.m. EDT on June 22, covers both Northern Berrien and Southern Berrien counties. Hazardous conditions are set to begin at 2 p.m. EDT Monday afternoon and remain in effect through late tonight, with the statement expiring at 5:00 a.m. EDT on June 23.
What Swimmers and Beachgoers Should Know
According to the National Weather Service, strong currents pose a significant risk of pulling swimmers into deeper water. High waves are expected to create dangerous conditions along piers, where people can be swept off without warning.
The combination of wave action and current strength makes the affected stretches of Lake Michigan shoreline particularly hazardous during the window covered by the statement. Beachgoers are urged to avoid entering the water and to stay away from pier edges while conditions persist.
Affected Areas
The Beach Hazards Statement applies specifically to Northern Berrien County and Southern Berrien County, both located along the southwestern tip of Michigan’s Lower Peninsula where it meets Lake Michigan. The region includes popular summer destinations along the lakeshore and sees heavy recreational traffic during warm-weather months.
Residents and visitors planning to spend time at local beaches or along piers should monitor updated forecasts from the National Weather Service Northern Indiana office as conditions develop throughout the day.
