SPRING HILL, FLORIDA β€” A tornado warning that prompted safety alerts across Pasco County expired at 3:00 PM EDT today after the severe thunderstorm weakened below dangerous thresholds, according to the National Weather Service Tampa Bay Ruskin office.

The warning was initially issued at 2:45 PM EDT when radar detected rotation in a severe thunderstorm located near Timber Pines, close to Hudson. The storm was moving east at 15 mph with the potential to produce a tornado.

Storm Track and Affected Areas

Weather officials warned that the dangerous storm would reach Spring Hill and Timber Pines around 2:50 PM EDT. Other locations impacted by the tornadic thunderstorm included Shady Hills.

The National Weather Service had warned residents about flying debris that would be dangerous to those caught without shelter. Mobile homes faced potential damage or destruction, while damage to roofs, windows, and vehicles was expected along with likely tree damage.

Warning Cancellation

At 2:55 PM EDT, meteorologists issued an updated alert stating the storm had weakened below severe limits and no longer appeared capable of producing a tornado. The warning was allowed to expire at its scheduled 3:00 PM EDT time.

Despite the cancellation, the National Weather Service cautioned that gusty winds and heavy rain remained possible with the thunderstorm as it continued to move through the area.

Radar-Indicated Threat

The tornado warning was based on radar-indicated rotation rather than visual confirmation of a tornado on the ground. This type of warning is issued when Doppler radar detects rotation within a thunderstorm that could spawn a tornado.

The brief but intense weather event highlights the rapidly changing conditions that can occur during Florida’s severe weather season. Residents in the affected areas experienced approximately 15 minutes of tornado warning conditions before the threat subsided.
