INDIANTOWN, FLORIDA β€” The National Weather Service issued a flood advisory for Martin County late Sunday evening as heavy rainfall from thunderstorms caused minor flooding in low-lying areas and locations with poor drainage.

The advisory, issued at 10:56 PM EDT on May 11, remained in effect until 12:30 AM EDT on May 12, according to the Melbourne office of the National Weather Service.

Rainfall Totals and Impact

Doppler radar and automated rain gauges indicated that between 2 and 3 inches of rain had fallen across the affected area by late Sunday evening. Weather officials warned that an additional inch of rainfall was expected, which would result in continued minor flooding conditions.

The flooding primarily affects Indiantown and other low-lying areas throughout Martin County. Minor flooding was either ongoing or expected to begin shortly after the advisory was issued, according to the weather service.

Thunderstorm Activity

The heavy rainfall resulted from thunderstorm activity moving through east central Florida. The weather service noted that the excessive rainfall created conditions conducive to flooding in areas with inadequate drainage systems.

Officials reminded residents to avoid driving through flooded roadways and to stay informed about changing weather conditions. The National Weather Service provides flood safety information at www.weather.gov/safety/flood.

Advisory Details

The flood advisory specifically covered a portion of east central Florida, with Martin County being the primary area of concern. Weather officials monitored the situation throughout the evening hours as thunderstorms continued to produce heavy rainfall across the region.

Minor flooding typically affects roads, parking lots, and other low-lying areas but does not usually pose a significant threat to life or property when proper precautions are taken.
