GAYLORD, MICHIGAN β€” The National Weather Service issued multiple weather alerts across northern Lower Michigan on Friday afternoon, warning residents of potentially damaging frost and freeze conditions that could persist through Monday morning.

A Freeze Warning remains in effect from 2 AM to 8 AM EDT Sunday for portions of northern Lower Michigan, with sub-freezing temperatures as low as 32 degrees expected. The warning affects areas including counties east of US-131 and north of M-72.

A Frost Advisory covers Alcona, Alpena, Arenac, Iosco, Leelanau, and Presque Isle counties during the same timeframe Sunday morning, with temperatures dropping to 36 degrees and frost formation anticipated.

Extended Cold Threat

Weather officials have issued Freeze Watches extending from Sunday evening through Monday morning at 8 AM EDT for the same regions. The watches warn of potentially harder freeze conditions, with temperatures possibly falling as low as 28 degrees in some areas of northern Lower Michigan.

The National Weather Service Gaylord office noted that frost and freeze conditions could kill crops and other sensitive vegetation. Officials specifically warned that sensitive outdoor plants may be killed if left uncovered during the cold snap.

Weather Pattern Details

Meteorologists explained that northwesterly winds are likely to remain as high as 10-15 mph overnight Friday, particularly across northeast Lower Michigan and areas east of US-131 and north of M-72. These wind conditions may prevent low-level temperature inversions from forming tonight.

Conditions are expected to change by Sunday night as high pressure moves into the region. This weather pattern may lead to clearing skies and light winds, creating ideal conditions for radiational cooling and more severe frost formation.

Agricultural Concerns

The timing of the freeze warnings poses particular challenges for the region’s agricultural sector and gardening enthusiasts. With temperatures potentially reaching the upper 20s in some areas, the cold snap threatens crops and vegetation that are typically vulnerable during the growing season.

Residents are advised to take precautions to protect sensitive plants and outdoor vegetation. The weather service emphasized that both frost and freeze conditions could cause significant damage to uncovered plants.

The weather alerts were issued Friday at 3:09 PM EDT by the National Weather Service office in Gaylord, which monitors weather conditions across northern Michigan. All current warnings and advisories remain in effect through their scheduled expiration times early Monday morning.
