National Weather Service Tracks Strong Thunderstorm Near Leland
Strong thunderstorm tracked near Leland Tuesday evening with landspout potential and 40 mph wind gusts threatening multiple communities.

LELAND, NORTH CAROLINA β The National Weather Service issued a special weather statement Tuesday evening as Doppler radar tracked a strong thunderstorm capable of producing a landspout near Batarora, approximately nine miles west of Leland.
The storm was moving south at 15 mph as of 6:37 p.m. EDT on May 28, according to the NWS Wilmington office. Weather officials warned residents of potential landspouts and wind gusts reaching up to 40 mph.
Areas Under Weather Alert
The thunderstorm’s path included several communities in southeastern North Carolina. Locations impacted by the weather system included Batarora, Bishop, Town Creek, and Winnabow.
Radar indicated the storm system posed risks to outdoor activities and property. The National Weather Service cautioned that minor damage to outdoor objects was possible during the storm’s passage through the region.
Potential Storm Impacts
Weather officials warned that gusty winds could knock down tree limbs and blow around unsecured objects. Residents in the affected areas were advised to secure loose outdoor items and exercise caution while the storm moved through their communities.
The landspout threat, while typically less severe than tornadoes, still posed risks to the area. These rotating columns of air can develop quickly under strong thunderstorms and cause localized damage.
The National Weather Service continued monitoring the storm system as it progressed southward through Brunswick County. Officials advised residents to stay informed about changing weather conditions and take appropriate safety precautions.
