DETROIT, MICHIGAN β€” Democratic candidates for federal office in Michigan announced a series of mutual endorsements this week, with U.S. Senate hopeful Abdul El-Sayed and congressional candidate state Rep. Donavan McKinney cross-endorsing each other’s primary campaigns on Friday.

El-Sayed, who is seeking the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate, and McKinney, a Detroit Democrat running for the party’s nomination in Michigan’s 13th Congressional District, announced their mutual support through social media posts. The endorsements highlight growing alliances among progressive candidates in Michigan’s competitive Democratic primaries.

Labor Union Backing for Stevens

Meanwhile, U.S. Rep. Haley Stevens of Birmingham received endorsements from two major labor organizations in her Senate primary bid. Boilermakers Local 169 and SMART Local 292 both announced their support for Stevens’ campaign this week.

Stevens also earned recognition from Moms Demand Action, which awarded her the Gun Sense Candidate Distinction for her positions on firearm safety legislation.

Congressional Race Endorsements

In Michigan’s 4th Congressional District race, state Sen. Sean McCann of Kalamazoo announced Thursday that he had secured backing from five additional labor unions. The organizations supporting McCann include Teamsters Local 406, Michigan UA Plumbers & Pipefitters, SMART-Transportation Department, American Federation of State County and Municipal Employees, and the Michigan Education Association.

For Michigan’s 7th Congressional District, Bridget Brink received an endorsement from Ingham County Commissioner Todd Tennis in her Democratic primary campaign.

McKinney also picked up additional support beyond his cross-endorsement with El-Sayed. Two activist organizations, Indivisible:Downriver United 734 and Eastside Indivisible Alliance, issued a unified endorsement of the Detroit state representative’s congressional bid.

State Legislative Races

In state-level contests, Chedrick Greene earned endorsements from the Michigan Association of Police Organizations and NASW-Michigan for his campaign in Michigan’s 35th State Senate District.

Democrat Rebecca Amidon also collected multiple endorsements as she seeks election to Michigan’s 32nd State Senate District, according to the political briefing.

El-Sayed had previously announced support from state Rep. Laurie Pohutsky of Livonia, adding to his growing list of legislative endorsements in the competitive Senate primary.

The endorsement announcements come as Michigan Democrats prepare for primary elections that will determine the party’s nominees for several key federal and state offices. The mutual support between El-Sayed and McKinney suggests coordination among progressive candidates seeking to build momentum in their respective races.
