CARBONDALE, ILLINOIS β€” The National Weather Service has issued a lake wind advisory for multiple bodies of water across southern Illinois and southeastern Missouri, warning boaters and small craft operators of hazardous conditions through 7 PM tonight.

The advisory, issued at 10:16 AM by the NWS office in Paducah, Kentucky, affects three major lakes in the region. South winds of 10 to 15 mph with gusts reaching up to 25 mph are expected to create dangerous conditions for small watercraft.

Affected Areas

In Illinois, the advisory covers Crab Orchard Lake in Williamson County and Rend Lake spanning Franklin and Jefferson Counties. Missouri’s Lake Wappapello in Wayne County is also included in the warning.

Weather officials warn that the combination of strong winds and rough waves will create hazardous conditions specifically for small craft operators. The advisory remains in effect until 7 PM Central Daylight Time this evening.

Safety Recommendations

Boaters are advised to monitor weather conditions closely and consider postponing trips on the affected lakes until conditions improve. The National Weather Service typically issues lake wind advisories when sustained winds or frequent gusts pose risks to small boats and personal watercraft.

Lake Wappapello, located in Wayne County, Missouri, is a popular destination for fishing and recreational boating. Similarly, Crab Orchard Lake and Rend Lake in southern Illinois attract numerous visitors for water activities, particularly during warmer weather months.

The winds are expected to diminish this evening, allowing for safer boating conditions after 7 PM. Mariners should continue monitoring updated weather forecasts and advisories from the National Weather Service throughout the day.
