KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI β€” The National Weather Service issued a special weather statement Thursday evening warning of patchy dense fog developing across the Kansas City metropolitan area that could reduce visibility to half a mile or less.

The weather advisory was issued at 10:35 p.m. CDT on May 8 by the NWS Kansas City/Pleasant Hill office, alerting drivers to exercise caution during overnight and early morning travel periods.

Visibility Concerns for Friday Morning Commute

Meteorologists warned that the fog formation could happen quickly, creating hazardous driving conditions with little advance notice. The dense fog patches are expected to significantly impact visibility across roadways throughout the region.

The weather service advised motorists to use extra caution if traveling and to maintain increased following distances between vehicles. Drivers should reduce speeds and use low-beam headlights when encountering foggy conditions.

Safety Recommendations

Transportation officials recommend that commuters allow additional travel time Friday morning and consider delaying non-essential trips until visibility improves. The fog typically dissipates as temperatures rise with the morning sun.

The Kansas City area has experienced variable weather conditions this spring, with temperature fluctuations creating ideal atmospheric conditions for fog development. High humidity combined with cooler overnight temperatures often leads to the formation of dense fog in river valleys and low-lying areas common throughout the metropolitan region.

Drivers are encouraged to monitor local weather updates and road conditions before beginning their morning commute. The National Weather Service continues to monitor atmospheric conditions and will issue additional advisories if warranted.
