TikTok Investor Donates $1M to Blackburn’s Tennessee Governor Campaign
A billionaire TikTok investor donated $1 million to support Sen. Marsha Blackburn’s governor campaign despite her past criticism of the social media app.

NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE β Billionaire Jeff Yass, a major investor in TikTok, donated $1 million to a political action committee supporting U.S. Sen. Marsha Blackburn’s campaign for Tennessee governor, according to the latest state campaign finance disclosures.
The contribution makes Yass the largest single donor to the Team Tennessee PAC, which has raised $3.2 million in just over a year to support Blackburn’s gubernatorial bid. The donation comes despite Blackburn’s previous criticism of the social media platform in which Yass holds a significant financial stake.
Blackburn’s Past Opposition to TikTok
The donation creates an apparent contradiction given Blackburn’s public stance against TikTok. In 2024, the senator opposed the opening of a TikTok office in Nashville, citing the app’s ties to the Chinese government.
That same year, Blackburn called the app a “national security threat” in an Instagram post. Her criticism has focused on concerns about Chinese government influence over the popular social media platform.
Major Donors to Team Tennessee PAC
Beyond Yass’s $1 million contribution, the Team Tennessee PAC’s second-largest donor is Advance Financial, a payday lending company that has given $400,000 to the organization. Advance Financial relies on Tennessee lawmakers to maintain legislation that allows the company to charge 279.5% annual interest on payday loans by sidestepping state interest rate caps.
An investigation by Tennessee Lookout and ProPublica found that Advance Financial has sued over 110,000 Tennesseans and maintains close relationships with prominent Republican state lawmakers.
Yass’s Political Influence in Tennessee
Yass serves as a prominent donor to President Donald Trump’s political operations and Club for Growth, an organization that has invested millions in Tennessee to promote private school vouchers. Club for Growth spent $3.3 million through its School Freedom Fund during the 2024 state legislative elections.
The group’s success in electing pro-voucher candidates enabled Tennessee lawmakers to pass a statewide private school voucher plan in 2025. The legislation represented a significant victory for school choice advocates who had previously faced resistance in the state legislature.
The latest campaign finance disclosure reveals the growing financial influence of national donors in Tennessee’s gubernatorial race as Blackburn seeks to transition from her Senate seat to the governor’s mansion. The Team Tennessee PAC’s fundraising success demonstrates the significant resources being marshaled to support her candidacy.
