RALEIGH, NORTH CAROLINA — The National Weather Service issued multiple wildfire warnings across North Carolina on Wednesday. Dangerous conditions are expected to continue through Thursday evening as low humidity and gusty winds create ideal conditions for rapid fire spread.
Relative humidity values have dropped to 20-30 percent across the state, while southwest winds gusting 15-25 mph are drying out vegetation further. This combination poses significant risks for wildfire ignition and spread, according to weather officials.
Statewide Burn Ban Remains in Effect
The North Carolina Forest Service’s statewide burn ban prohibits all open burning, making any outdoor fires illegal throughout the state. Weather service offices across the region emphasized that dry grasses, dead leaves, and tree litter could easily ignite under current conditions.
“Most dry grasses, dead leaves, and other tree litter could easily ignite and spread fire quickly,” the National Weather Service office in Raleigh warned in its special weather statement issued Wednesday evening.
Safety Warnings for Residents
Authorities are urging residents and visitors to exercise extreme caution with potential ignition sources. Officials specifically warned against improper handling of cigarettes, matches, and machinery that could create sparks.
The weather service advised people to properly dispose of cigarette butts and matches in appropriate containers. Vehicle operators should avoid parking on dry leaves and grass, as hot exhaust systems could trigger fires.
“Residents and visitors are urged to exercise caution handling any potential ignition source, including machinery, cigarettes, and matches,” according to the National Weather Service Blacksburg office, which issued updates early Thursday morning.
Regional Impact
The elevated fire risk extends beyond North Carolina’s borders. Virginia has implemented restricted burning hours, prohibiting open burning before 4:00 PM EDT each day through April 30th. Parts of central and eastern Virginia, including Northampton County, North Carolina, face similar dangerous conditions.
Weather offices from Newport/Morehead City to Greenville-Spartanburg issued coordinated warnings highlighting the combination of extremely dry fuels, warm temperatures, and reduced humidity creating widespread fire danger.
The ongoing drought conditions have left vegetation particularly vulnerable to ignition. Weather officials note that fires that do start will be able to catch and spread rapidly under the current meteorological conditions.
