COLUMBUS, OHIO β€” Defense contractors receive a significant share of Ohioans’ federal tax dollars, second only to Medicare, Medicaid, and interest payments on the national debt, according to a new analysis released on Tax Day.

The Institute for Policy Studies’ 2026 Tax Day report found that nearly $900 billion is spent annually on defense, with the Pentagon directing 54% of that funding to defense contractors such as Lockheed Martin, sometimes for weapons systems of questionable military value.

Medicare and Medicaid provide health care to more than 144 million Americans, while paying interest on the $39 trillion national debt remains a federal obligation, the analysis noted.

Tax Dollar Distribution Breakdown

The average American taxpayer sends more money to defense contractors than the combined total paid for food and agriculture, school lunches, housing and urban development, disaster relief, and national parks and the environment, according to the report.

The analysis highlights how federal spending priorities allocate taxpayer resources, with defense contractor payments representing a significant portion of discretionary federal expenditures.

Defense Spending Context

The report raises questions about the value of current defense spending levels, particularly regarding weapons systems that may not provide clear military advantages. Campaign contributions from defense contractors to congressional representatives have been cited as a factor influencing these spending decisions.

The $900 billion annual defense budget is one of the largest categories of federal spending, with more than half flowing to private contractors rather than direct military operations or personnel.

The Institute for Policy Studies compiled the data as part of its annual Tax Day analysis, which examines how federal tax revenue is distributed across various government programs and contractors.
