Career Ups and Downs
Born in 1987 as Robert Rahmeek Williams, the rapper has an older sister. He grew up with a single mother. His mother grew up in poverty. Meek had a similar path to his mother. When he was just five years old, his father got killed during an attempted robbery. After the death, his mother moved the family to North Philadelphia. There, they lived in a three-bedroom apartment on Berks Street.
Meek and his family had little to no money. His mother worked jobs like cutting hair to feed her family. She even did some shoplifting. Meek showed shyness as a kid. He didn’t talk to many people. The one person he related to was his uncle on his father’s side. Grandmaster Nell, the pioneering DJ, left a huge impact on Meek’s life. His uncle influenced Will Smith, so Meek started listening to rap.
As a teenager, Mill took part in rap battles. He used the pseudonym Meek Millz. During his teenage years, Robert stayed up late to write phrases and verses in his notebook. Together with three friends, he formed the rap group The Blooodhoundz. They brought blank CDs and encouraged friends to burn the group’s songs and give them out. At the age of 18, Meek got arrested for illegal possession of a firearm.
The young rapper started releasing mixtapes in the mid-2000s. His first big hit was Flamerz. Meek released the mixtape in 2007 after spending a year in jail.
That mixtape and the next one caught the attention of Grand Hustle Records and Warner Brothers Records. But before signing a deal, he got arrested again and spent seven months in jail. He then signed with Maybach Music Group.
In 2012, Meek released his debut studio album Dreams and Nightmares. It reached Number 1 on the US Rap and US Hip Hop charts. And it peaked at Number 1 on the Billboard 200 chart.
Three years later, Mill released his second album, Dreams Worth More than Money. Again, he reached Number 1 on the Billboard 200 chart, US Rap, and US Hip Hop chart.
Meek continued his successful career with another album in 2017. Titled Wins & Loses, the third album reached Number 2 on the US Rap and US Hip Hop chart. Mill also has four compilation albums and nine mixtapes.
In March 2017, he got arrested at an airport in St. Louis for assaulting two pedestrians. And in November the same year, he got sentenced to two to four years in state prison for violating his parole. He served five months at the State Correctional Institution before getting released while his trial continues.
In August 2019, a documentary about his battle with the criminal justice system got released. Titled Free Meek, the documentary appeared on Prime Video. And the rapper served as the executive producer on the series.
Meek dated Nicki Minaj from 2015 to 2017. The two started their relationship during Minaj’s World Tour in 2015.
In 2018 Meek and Jay-Z founded the REFORM Alliance Foundation. Their goal is to reform the criminal justice system, mainly probation and parole.
