Strong thunderstorms producing 50 mph winds prompted an extended severe weather watch across 11 Missouri and Kansas counties through 4 AM Tuesday.

SPRINGFIELD, MISSOURI — The National Weather Service has extended a severe thunderstorm watch across multiple counties in southwest and central Missouri until 4 AM CDT Tuesday morning, as strong storms continue moving southeast at 40 mph.

Weather officials issued the extended watch at 1:27 AM CDT for an additional four counties in central Missouri, expanding coverage beyond the original seven counties under Watch 292. The storms are producing wind gusts up to 50 mph that could knock down tree limbs and blow around unsecured objects.

Doppler radar tracked the line of strong thunderstorms extending from near Rich Hill to 9 miles west of Nevada to near Fort Scott at 1:30 AM CDT, according to a special weather statement from the National Weather Service Springfield office.

Counties Under Watch

In Missouri, the watch now covers nine counties total. The original watch includes five counties in southwest and west central Missouri: Barton, Cedar, Dade, St. Clair, and Vernon. The extension added four central Missouri counties: Benton, Camden, Hickory, and Morgan.

In Kansas, two southeast counties remain under the watch: Bourbon and Crawford.

Communities at Risk

The initial weather statement identified specific locations in the storm’s path, including Nevada, Fort Scott, Sheldon, Walker, Schell City, Bronaugh, Moundville, Richards, Milo, Deerfield, Metz, Harwood, Horton, and Garland.

Cities covered under the extended watch include Appleton City, Arnica, Caplinger Mills, Cedar Springs, Chicopee, El Dorado Springs, Filley, Fort Scott, Greenfield, Johnson City, Kenoma, Lamar, Lockwood, Lone Oak, Meinert, Nevada, Pawnee Station, Pittsburg, Stockton, and Tiffin.

The watch extension covers Camdenton, Cole Camp, Crockerville, Cross Timbers, Decaturville, Edmonson, Hermitage, Laurie, Lincoln, Mora, Osage Beach, Pittsburg, Quincy, Roach, Rocky Mount, Stover, Versailles, Village of Four Seasons, Warsaw, Weaubleau, Wheatland, and Whitakerville.

Weather officials are monitoring the storms using radar indication as they continue their southeast movement through the early morning hours. Residents in affected areas should secure outdoor objects and remain alert for changing conditions until the watch expires at 4 AM CDT.
