PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA — The National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Philadelphia and surrounding areas on June 6, as dangerous storms moved eastward across the region at 45 mph.
The warning, issued at 7:42 PM EDT and remaining in effect until 8:00 PM EDT, warned of 60 mph wind gusts capable of causing significant damage to roofs, siding, trees, and power lines. Radar indicated the severe thunderstorms were positioned along a line extending from near Robertsville to Jacksonville.
Widespread Impact Across Multiple Counties
The warning covered an extensive area including major population centers throughout southeastern Pennsylvania and central New Jersey. Philadelphia served as the primary metropolitan area under threat, along with numerous surrounding communities.
New Jersey locations impacted by the warning included Toms River, Trenton, Long Branch, Asbury Park, Lakewood, Middletown, Old Bridge, Jackson, Howell, East Brunswick, South Brunswick, Marlboro, Manalapan, Ewing, Willingboro, Medford, Tinton Falls, and Holmdel. Pennsylvania areas under the warning included Bensalem in addition to Philadelphia.

The National Weather Service Mount Holly office issued the alert based on radar detection of the storm system’s intensity and movement patterns. Wind gusts reaching 60 mph posed the primary threat to the region, with meteorologists warning residents of potential property damage.
Such wind speeds can snap tree branches, down power lines, and cause structural damage to buildings. The fast-moving nature of the storm system meant conditions could deteriorate rapidly across the warned areas as the line of thunderstorms progressed eastward.
