Sen. Rick Scott Urges Tampa Sports Authority to Cancel Kanye West Concerts
Florida Senator Rick Scott calls on Tampa Sports Authority to cancel Kanye West’s June concerts at taxpayer-funded Raymond James Stadium over antisemitic remarks.

TAMPA, FLORIDA β U.S. Sen. Rick Scott is calling on the Tampa Sports Authority to cancel rapper Kanye West’s upcoming concerts at Raymond James Stadium, citing the artist’s history of antisemitic remarks.
In a letter sent Thursday to the government organization that operates the Tampa stadium, Scott urged the authority board to “carefully review this decision” regarding West’s scheduled performances on June 26 and 28.
Senator Cites Antisemitic Comments
“West’s remarks are vile and a slap in the face to our state’s Jewish community. It is troubling that a stadium supported by taxpayer dollars would openly subsidize an event led by an artist known for pushing this dangerous, hateful rhetoric, especially with Florida having one of the largest Jewish populations in our country,” Scott wrote in the letter.
The Republican senator and former two-term Florida governor specifically referenced West’s controversial social media posts targeting Jewish people. In 2022, West posted on X and Instagram that he was “going death con 3 On JEWISH PEOPLE.” Many of these messages were subsequently removed by the platforms or by West himself.
Stadium Authority Stands Firm
Despite Scott’s call for cancellation, the Tampa Sports Authority indicated the concerts will proceed as planned. The authority released a statement Thursday defending its position on free speech principles.
“We recognize the concerns and viewpoints being expressed about the upcoming events at Raymond James Stadium. As a public agency, we follow the principles of free speech in operating our venue, although we do not condone remarks or actions from any artists that are offensive and divisive,” the Tampa Sports Authority told the Florida Phoenix in an email.
The Grammy-winning artist, who legally changed his name to Ye in 2021, has performed less frequently in recent years following various controversies.
Financial Consequences of Past Remarks
West’s antisemitic comments have already carried significant financial consequences. The rapper lost his deal with Adidas in 2022, which according to Forbes represented $1.5 billion of his net worth.
Raymond James Stadium hosts numerous major recording artists throughout the year. Other performers scheduled to appear at the venue this year include Bruno Mars, Chris Stapleton, Ed Sheeran, and Post Malone.
The controversy highlights ongoing tensions between free speech principles and concerns about providing platforms for artists with histories of inflammatory statements. The Tampa Sports Authority’s decision to maintain the concerts despite pressure from Florida’s senior senator reflects the complex balance public venues must navigate when booking controversial performers.
