KEY WEST, FLORIDA β€” The National Weather Service issued a coastal flood statement for the Lower Florida Keys on Monday morning, warning residents and visitors of minor saltwater flooding expected to continue through Monday evening.

The advisory, issued at 4:19 a.m. and effective until midnight Tuesday, alerts residents to potential flooding of low-elevation streets and parking areas during high tide periods.

Expected Flooding Impacts

Weather officials predict that some storm drains will overflow and certain seawalls and docks will be overtopped as tidal waters rise above normal levels. The flooding poses particular concerns for motorists, who should exercise caution around persistent puddles that likely contain saltwater mixtures.

Boaters operating in the area can expect reduced clearance under fixed bridges during peak tide times. The National Weather Service noted that the flooding will occur primarily during high tide periods throughout the day.

Safety Recommendations

Authorities advise drivers to avoid attempting to navigate through standing water, as persistent puddles around high tide times almost certainly contain saltwater that can damage vehicles. The corrosive nature of saltwater presents additional risks to both vehicles and infrastructure.

The coastal flood statement covers specifically the Lower Florida Keys region, with conditions expected to gradually improve after Monday evening as tidal levels recede.

Ongoing Monitoring

The National Weather Service Key West office continues to monitor tidal conditions and coastal water levels throughout the advisory period. Residents should remain aware of changing conditions, particularly during scheduled high tide times when flooding impacts will be most pronounced.

Local emergency management officials recommend that residents in low-lying areas take appropriate precautions to protect property and avoid unnecessary travel through potentially flooded roadways during peak tidal periods.
