Michigan House LGBTQ Caucus Reads Pride Resolution on Capitol Steps After GOP Leadership Blocks Floor Reading
For the second year in a row, Michigan’s Republican House leadership blocked a Pride Month resolution from the floor β so lawmakers read it on the Capitol steps in the rain.

LANSING, MICHIGAN β Members of the Michigan House LGBTQ Caucus and their allies gathered on the steps of the State Capitol on June 17, 2026, to read aloud a resolution recognizing June as LGBTQ+ Pride Month after Republican House leadership declined, for the second consecutive year, to allow the resolution to be read on the House floor.
The group proceeded with the outdoor reading despite a rainy afternoon, with the Capitol steps serving as a substitute for the chamber floor where the lawmakers had hoped to present their message.
Resolution Sent to Committee Without Action
The resolution, introduced as HR 329, would formally declare June 2026 as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer Pride Month in the state of Michigan. After its introduction, it was immediately referred to the House Government Operations Committee, where it is expected to remain without action until after June concludes.
Rep. Julie Brixie (D-Okemos) read from the resolution during the Capitol steps gathering. “We encourage all Michiganders to recognize the value of diversity in our communities and to join in acknowledging the contributions of LGBTQ+ residents to the culture, economy, and civic life of this great state,” Brixie read aloud, according to Michigan Advance.
Lawmakers Describe Being Met With Silence
State Rep. Jason Morgan (D-Ann Arbor), who is openly gay, spoke to reporters following the reading and described how the caucus had followed standard procedures in submitting the resolution and requesting its passage.
“We requested to pass this resolution once again this year, and were met with resistance to that,” Morgan said. “The answer was not just no, but silence. The resolution was immediately sent to government operations, where we expect it to rest for the rest of June.”
Morgan said no one from any House leadership office had reached out to the resolution’s sponsors to discuss it, according to Michigan Advance. The resolution went through the standard resolutions process but received no response from Republican leadership beyond its referral to committee.
Second Straight Year Blocked
This marks the second year in a row that Republican House leadership has declined to allow a Pride Month resolution to be read on the House floor, according to Michigan Advance. A similar situation unfolded in 2025, when the chamber’s LGBTQ Caucus faced comparable resistance after Republicans returned to the House majority.
With the resolution now sitting in the House Government Operations Committee and Pride Month set to end June 30, the sponsors of HR 329 do not expect the measure to receive a hearing before the month concludes.
